OVER-EXISTING

Alt_Cph is an independent exhibition gathering selected contemporary artist-run and alternative exhibition spaces across Europe. Alt_Cph 18 is dedicated to presenting new performance art.

Tripping over hedges to create an ideal landscape of opportunities
Opportuning the ideal fan-scape
This other Eden, this demi-paradise;
Impersonating a political fiction
Impersonating Shania Twain?
Am I over-existing?

Performance art is blooming. While performance art’s entry into larger institutions is a fairly new and welcomed development in Denmark, the discipline has always played a prominent part in smaller, artist-run exhibition spaces. Alt_Cph 18 will gather and strengthen the scattered movements already found in the artist-run initiatives across Europe and present a wide spectrum of artists and platforms in the vast hall of Fabrikken for Kunst og Design.

With an overlap of performance and installation art, Alt_Cph 18 focuses on the moment in which an interaction materializes and is transformed into something else. Each performance presented during the exhibition will leave an artefact or trace behind, marked by what just happened. In this way the exhibition will be in constant development and only reach a final, frozen form by its ending Sunday evening.

The exhibition design, which ties the content of Alt_Cph 18 together, consists of a giant metal grid and vibrant pink floor making up the body of a large living sculpture.

Parallel with the exhibition, a discursive program with a theoretical focus will be conducted, including talks, lectures and seminars presented by artists, curators and theorists of the field.

The program will be launched Friday 25 May 2018 with an opening ceremony at 4 pm leading up to a grand party performance later in the evening.

The exhibition will be open from Friday 25 May - Sunday 27 May.

Adult

Adult presents national and international contemporary art.The curating work of Adult is conceptual, with the goal of exploring new exhibition forms.

Miriam Kongstad
Worker’s Choice
Worker’s Choice is a study and celebration of struggles within historical and contemporary representation of the capitalized female form in a territory of limited expression. A damp denim skin is shed, only to reveal an even colder armor underneath – and so the work continues.

Mira Winding
Teenage Tragedy
A play performed by boys

Marie Lea Lund
Honoring Pain
A performance that portraits depression, loss and pain as a gifted opportunity for growth and a shift in consciousness. How is your energetic body doing today?

YOUNG GIRL READING GROUP

Dorota Gawęda (PL) and Eglė Kulbokaitė (LT) are an artist duo founded in 2013, living in Basel and Athens. In  their work they address feminist inspired theory and fiction, technology-driven emancipation and discursiveness of space. With YOUNG GIRL READING GROUP, Gawęda and Kulbokaitė investigate the act of reading as an intimate experience, holding the potentiality to become public performance through the “outlouding” of words. Agatha Valkyrie Ice is a multi-platform, participatory, self-performance project and enquiry that functions as an artistic strategy to explore parallels in identity and artistic production.

For Alt_Cph:

YGRG 154: Body Heat III (2018) by Dorota Gawęda and Eglė Kulbokaitė (30 min) is an iteration of the artists' long term project Young Girl Reading Group (2013-). YGRG is a self-conscious aesthetic chamber for intimacy and discovery, a live Instagram hangout that aims to convey the feeling of a space in between dimensions and tension between digital and bodily worlds blending.

Age of Aquarius

Age of Aquarius is a collaboration between artists Nanna Starck and Uffe Isolotto, and manifests itself as both a curatorial exhibition and event platform in a rooftop garden, and as an internationally exhibiting collaborative. The thematic base for all of Age of Aquarius’ activities is the garden cycle, and the curating and the artworks reflect the pragmatics of the garden. Because of the nature of the space - an intimate open-air venue overlooking the Copenhagen skyline in a public health center with private penthouse apartments - notions of private and public space are part of the curating and experience of the artworks. The focus is mainly on intimate experiences through sculptures, performance, sound and video.

For Alt_Cph 18:

STD Pollination
In an act of counter-evolutionary reproduction, the sculpture-cum-garden releases clouds of sexually transmitted diseases, engulfing the space in flawed pollination.

Annual Reportt

Annual Reportt is an occasional exhibition platform and ad hoc laboratory for investigating the overlapping peripheries of various artistic disciplines, including design, art, architecture, music and performance. With a focus on language, transmission, mediation and translation within the arts, the platform seeks to facilitate a critical discourse within the field of contemporary cultural production. The platform is run by the office for graphic design, typography and research Alexis Mark, and was established during the summer of 2017.

The Live Archive, a prototype
The Live Archive
is the prototype of an installationary medium which speculates in the simultaneous transmission and archiving of time-based work and performance art. Based on an increasingly decentralised user/consumer experience, The Live Archive utilises the Internet to, through sound and still-images, show and record performances in a reflexive relationship in which both the performer’s and the public's environments are summarised. The project is ongoing and will develop and transmit throughout the duration of Alt_Cph 18.

For Alt_Cph: The Institut d'Esthétique

The Institut d'Esthétique (Beauty Parlor) is an artistic project founded by Emile Degorce-Dumas, Haily Grenet and Vincent Voillat, to question notions of estheticism within the environment of a beauty salon. The institute collaborates with artists from various backgrounds to examine the possibility of creating direct connections between the public and artworks.

For Alt_Cph 18, Anaïs Lepage, curator heiwata Paris invites The Institut d'Esthétique to explore the notion of "Spiritual Materialism". Translated to a hyper-connected world eager for perfection and visibility as much as authenticity, "Spiritual Materialism" echoes the meeting of Eastern spiritualities and healing practices with Western researches for self improvement and happiness.

Together with artists Sharon Van Overmeiren, Christine Overvad Hansen and Yarisal & Kublitz, they conceive a therapeutic, meditative and spiritual installation dealing with opposite desires. This performative environment is transformed over the days by ritual gestures and interactions with the public.

Maria Metsalu, born in 1990, is an Estonian choreographer and performer. Her works express an ongoing interest in self-mythologization and autopoiesis via new, corporate technologies in an attempt to understand their unique terms of social exchange and transformation. Metsalu graduated from SNDO (School for New Dance Development) in 2016, and is one of the founding members of international performance group Young boy dancing group.

For Alt_Cph 18:

Mademoiselle X
This show doesn't want to show itself, it wants to hide inside an imitation. It'll fight if it has to, but it's vulnerable out in the open. If it takes us over, then it has no more enemies, nobody left to kill it. And then it's won.

Marronage

"We have put them up against the walls that they once built. Those who oppressed us can no longer reach us. Their world is unravelling. And we made it so. Now it is time for you - all our friends to claim what was denied us. Our time is now.”

Marronage is a collective of feminists that bring into focus narratives of resistance through editorial work, articles, and events. The journal Marronage was launched
on the occasion of the 2017 centennial of the sale of the former Danish West Indies and is dedicated to exposing the erasure of colonialism in the Nordic historical narrative. With contributions from artists, scholars, and activists, Marronage points to the colonial legacies of oppressive structures that we contend with today.

For Alt_Cph 18:

The political collective Marronage has initiated two collaborations for alt_cph 18: the performance “SDS” by RMPC X REFUGEE94 as well as “On the DownGlow,” a new work by choreographer just in F. Kennedy with Casper-Malte Augusta and Lydia Östberg Diakité.

Piscine and Bergman & Salinas

Piscine is a hybrid exhibition phenomenon that handles solo, group and collaborative situations. Piscine members are artists Mark Tholander, Jens Settergren and Ida Thorhauge.

Bergman & Salinas is an artist duo currently living and working in Portland. The duo is producing media, performance, internet, sound and sculptural works and objects in an interdisciplinary, conceptual yet socially engaged practice. The duo consists of Aeron Bergman (Detroit, USA) and Alejandra Salinas (La Rioja, Spain).

Piscine will take part in Alt_Cph18 in a collaboration with Bergman & Salinas. Revolving around the concept of normcore, their installatoric work comprising videos and banners will blend commercial aesthetics, fashion and infotainment. Exploring the chameleon as a figure linked to camouflage and shape-shifting, their installation will change continuously over the three days of the fair.

For Alt_Cph 18:

Be A Pattern for the World & They Stood High Under The Handkerchief
With installatory interventions that mutate from day to day, the concept of normcore is investigated through the chameleon as an imaginary figure associated with camouflage and shape-shifting.

New Noveta

New Noveta is the collaborative project of London based artists Ellen Freed and Keira Fox. Their performances are multidisciplinary, combining sound recording and music production, props and costumes, installation building and live body action/dance. The work is engrossed in ideas of social and political conformity, and methods in which to channel day-to-day anxiety and mental and emotional struggle. Embodying vital expressions of corporately stigmatized emotions, New Noveta go through grueling choreographed tasks with a reactive fervent distress, in order to oppose a quotidian numbed repetition of patriarchal society.

Hygge – that ubiquitous aesthetic condition. Supposedly defying translation to any other language than Danish, hygge functions as an escape: a turning inwards, towards the home, the bourgeois family, and the nation-state. Hygge can be understood as the space of non-politics – one delineated by candlelight and knitwear, by borderwalls and militarized folklore – but it is precisely this sense that makes it a treacherous concept. With this first in a series of exhibitionary experiments, Weekends (Rasmus Myrup) together with Jeppe Ugelvig, sets out to examine hygge as a social, aesthetic, and cultural concept.

Element 13
The resonance of the thirteenth element of the periodic table is investigated through amplification. Aluminium rods of different dimensions oscillates in both rhythmical and audible frequencies and are fed back through individual loudspeakers. The surrounding soundscape is built up during the performance and will vary from harmonic and meditative to noisy and distorted.

Kamilla Jørgensen
I am a Grammarian - Nailing Poetry and Grammar
Gertrude Steins basic way of writing was to perform her poetics in her texts. This performance is nailing her points and acting on an excerpt from Poetry and Grammar.

Low Batt
The headphones create a live waveform, reacting to the acoustic landscape in the space. The intervention superimposes an invisible architecture, which resembles a negative cast: sounds are inverted, countered, cancelled. Continuously changing their output, the headphones stand in both as performers and instruments played by the alt_cph fair environment and its visitors.

Sydhavn Station

The exhibition-space Sydhavn Station is located at a S-train station in the outskirts of Copenhagen. The artist-driven exhibition-space displays contemporary art at the station, and has created a cultural meeting point at this everyday place, which would usually not contain artworks. It is important for us to show the wide breadth of contemporary art and to help open the art scene for both foreign artists, newly graduated and elderly artists. The exhibition venue was launched in 2012 by 10 artists and is now contains 12 members, some of which are graduated from academies around Europe.

Komplot

Founded in 2002 in Brussels, Komplot is a curatorial collective of variable composition and condition. Concerned with nomadic creative practices and trends of specialisation, it operates as a platform for experimental art. Komplot conducted extensive research into post '68 collaborative art practices in Belgium, organising seminars and making two documentary films. Between 2010 and 2015 Komplot has been based in a building with an exhibition space and 12 artists' studios close to the Wiels art center in Forest. Now Komplot re-initiated a nomadic practice in Brussels, fragmenting its large venue into several addresses and beyond the city responding to invitations abroad. Meanwhile Komplot moves the focus from a collective structure to a form of organisation as a curator office, to expend more and more its agenda to interdisciplinary art practice that continuously searches for new formats and discourses. The group of resident curators of Komplot, with guest curators, develops a critical program that studies the relation between art and its physical, social and political environment. Komplot starts from a core of openness and flexibility regarding the programation, therefore its projects can take different forms: exhibitions, publications, films, discussions, workshops, symposium, events.

DANSEatelier

The initiative DANSEatelier origins from a group of friends that felt a need for continuity, a place for sharing knowledge, as well as social and artistic support - to basically stand together in our relationship with dance, dancing and choreography. It is a group taking steps away from the strong individualization that marks our present time. A large part of our work consists in finding ways on how to deal with the thought-action of rhizomatic structuring and multiple hierarchies, a constant organizational research in collectivity and togetherness.

Udsigt

Udsigt is several plays, which are written based on the same set of guidelines.

Four guidelines for the one or those, who are going to write a play. (1) The play is to take place at a location, which can act as the scenography for the play. There cannot be taken anything from the place, only added. (2) The play may not have an audience, the only way to experience the play, is by participating. The participants come as they are, and cannot be asked to bring anything, or have practiced or read anything beforehand. The roles in the play are given at random and all roles must be playable by everyone. When the play has begun, it must be able to complete without anybody else, but those who came unprepared, is present. (3) The one or those who have written the play, cannot be present, when the play is acted out. Therefore the play needs a gamemaster. The gamemaster is there to welcome and to be sure that everybody has come and are given a role. The gamemaster may participate in the play, but if the gamemaster does, then the gamemaster may not have a predetermined role, but have to be given one at random, like the rest of the group. (4) The play may not be documented by the one or those who have written the play. The line-up of the play (scenography, costumes, props, manuscripts) may be documented when the participants are not present. The participants may not be asked to document, but may take pictures and record during the play.

Country Music

Tools Forming, Under-Time: 07:00, 200 bpm Country Music is born on the factory floors of rural rust belts, in the bare dirt and stripped surpluses of anti-growth environments charged with visions of inflated simulation and toxic stimulation, in the corrosive regress of life and tempo in downgraded deindustrialized wastelands, and in the psychogeographies of the urban steel knit of precarious compositions. An alloy of work, speed and materials formed out of the potential energy of underused spaces to understand (club) music outside of high-pressure metropolitan milieus through the tools of duration and velocity. 8 minute blocks of benchmarked efficiency and efficacy, 40 hour terms of no service.

Country Music is a collaborative project by Daniel Iinatti and Anna Sagström dedicated to a reimagined music of the land and the contemporary periphery through explorations in music and tempo with producers from all over all counties. Releasing music, hosting parties and distributing text, Country Music is an alloy of work, speed and materials for a duration of 8 minutes, 4 pages or an entire evening at a time.

Bikubenfondens Visionssalon

Panel:
Christian Falsnaes, dansk performancekunstner bosiddende i Berlin. Han er uddannet fra Academy of Fine Art i Wien i 2011 og har siden da udstillet verden over.
Hannah Heilmann, dansk performancekunstner
